From the same warped vinyl mind behind Mexican Summer and much of Kemado's output (arguably two of NYC's most exciting indie labels), comes Anthology Recordings. Mind you, it's not fresh out of the oven - established in 2005, Anthology stands as a premier online retailer of an amazing range of releases. Acting as a virtual storefront for both a slew of sweet, small labels looking to push their reissues onto generations new and old as well as Anthology's exclusive acquisitions of lost treasures, a trove this truly is.
And so, Viva and Anthology put on their pirate garb and busted out the old treasure map to comb beaches of black wax and sand crates upon sand crates of pearly vinyl glory. The result: Sounds from the Anthology Archives, an exclusive digital compilation of rare and radical music curated by Anthology themselves. The compilation offers only a fraction of what Anthology has on its hands, but it's fraction full of satisfaction - we're talking solid, solid jams. The package comes with an elegantly designed booklet of beautiful photographs and in-depth descriptions of all artists in the collection, so you can learn more about the music while you're listening.

Our end of the deal; hooking it up with two exceptionally tasteful AA t-shirts pertaining to pop culture tantalizer Betty Davis and jam-out sectual leader Father Yod! Don't be mistaken, this is an all-inclusive deal which means that you can't have one without the other! Fancy that jive, you buy a t-shirt and instantly, your musical vocabulary is freakishly expansive.

Sweden's Wildbirds & Peacedrums dropped by the studio in September in the midst of a little frenzy that they were stirring up here in NYC. This all culminated with a performance they did opening for Deerhoof at Le Poisson Rouge a few days later, so we'd like to think that we were getting them in gear for what may have been one of their biggest shows to date.
But hey now, it's not like they would've shortchanged us in wanting to conserve their energy or anything - rather, they did a whole lot with way less equipment than they usually use. Plus the atmosphere was quite laid back with the rather objective-minded Swedes trying to make sense of certain Brooklyn attractions and people's perception of their jazz-approached non-jazz music.
They're married, so the rapport between this man/woman duo was that of unspoken intuitiveness and healthy tension. Wait, that sounds like a lot of good bands' dynamic. Well, these two sorted it out early because clearly, they're on the transcendental fast track to Valhalla. All that and more Scandinavian folklore on Me + You 61!

Get ready, New Yorkers - it's that time of the year agayn... Be prepared to have to weave in and out of hordes of college radio hotshots in town for CMJ 2009! Make time for one of 50 Kurt Vile shows and assure yourself that there is absolutely no need for you to obtain a $495 badge. More importantly, come down to the fabulous CAKE SHOP in the Lower East Side on Tuesday October 20th for an event that truly stands out amongst the shitpiles that some of these muso's call "bills".
Viva Radio is proud to get in on the Subbacultcha CMJ 2009 Showcase, brought to you by the Subbacultchas themselves as well as the wonderful Pukekos blog run by Brooklyn luminary BJ Rubin. Just in case you need some remindin', Subbacultcha is a great collective based out of Amsterdam which functions as a purveyor of experimental yet accessible contemporary music through a zine and a show night at various venues throughout A'dam. The crew also have a show on Viva, duh.
What's more is that the gang even get together and play music under the name The Moi Non Plus, whose sleekly designed LPs and angular post-pop present an attractive emulation of all sorts of exciting new music that's got us Americans all jazzed. The Moi Non Plus join several great bands on this bill, such as LA's sweet rocking Best Coast, NYC-based slicksters Blondes, and British convention-confronting outfit Male Bonding amongst a few other choice acts as well as sets by DJ Dan Selzer to round it all out with a nice Viva touch!
Cover charge is $8 - come on out and see this!

"Angel, a member of a punk rock band in the apocalyptic future, is kidnapped by Mok, a legendary super rocker. Obsessed with a dark experiment, Mok plans to use Angel's voice to summon a demon from another dimension. The rest of the band follows Mok to Nuke York in an attempt to get her back."
The media above should say it all, but after finding out about this on another fantastic (+ way more attractive) blog quite recently, I figured I had to post something in light of our screening of The Wall at the Lincoln Center last night. Some more animated rock 'n roll dystopia in one of those classic instances of "this children's movie can't possibly be aimed towards children". You know, the kind that you stumble upon either at some ungodly hour on cable TV or in the middle of the day when it seems almost offensively available to fragile young minds.
Either way, it took its creators at Nelvana a few rather drastic turns to pull themselves out of the debt they amassed by using about 8 million dollars = practically all of their studio's resources. The subsequent projects they involved themselves in to achieve this were just some little animated series, such as Inspector Gadget, The Care Bears, and, a personal favorite, Babar. They turned out alright.

Blinc and you'll miss it - that's just how we feel about these fantastic Lincoln Center film screenings. Sure, in this spooky Spooktober month you probably won't miss the chance to go see a delightful horror movie, since there's tons of that going on ( The Brood, anyone?). However, a different type of unsettling flick is to be projected onto the silver screen this Tuesday... We're talking about THE dystopic rock 'n roll movie of the 80's, folks: Pink Floyd's The Wall!
Attendance of this event is imperative - already on the Walter Reade Theatre's website (click for directions) they mention that this one will be played loudly. And why not? This film is a sensory shock, with a stunning synergy between the aural and visual. In keeping with the iconic album art that graced the source album in 1979, the film is tied together/unraveled by illustrator Gerald Scarfe's grotesque and surreal polymorphous animations. And while it reminds us that the whole concept of the story sprung from the rock 'n roll lifestyle itself with live action scenes featuring punk rocker Bob Geldof playing the psychotically indifferent burnout superstar confined to his hotel room, flashbacks and delusions dig deep into the human psyche touching on everything from childhood paternal absence, post-war England, marital estrangement, and acid casualties, touching on an actual encounter with former Floyd frontman Syd Barrett sadly enough.
"How heavy for a Tuesday night at 8 PM on October the 13th!" you might be telling yourself. Chances are that you've already seen this movie, which will soften the blow. Yet, even if you haven't seen it, we can help you to lighten up with the customary apres-film soiree, including as always free Stella Artois and cocktails! Not bad, considering the price of admission is a standard $11 for some not-so-standard amenities. "Hey, don't they usually enlist top notch Viva DJs to provide music for these little parties?" you might be asking yourself - well, of course we do! This time around, it's Progmaster Micah Moses' turn on the decks, whose devotion to hating on bad prog ensures his love for all music genuinely progressive as opposed to indulgent. Wait a second, where have I heard that creative conflict being addressed before... Sorry, a mental wall here, folks...

Me + You reaches #60 with the appropriately aged 60-year-old elder statesman of punk rock, Hugh Cornwell! An enlightening and energizing session indeed, Hugh came in and charmed the pants off of us while waiving his choice to try on some pants of his own, instead choosing to buy a couple of shirts and a dress for his niece.
For real, Hugh's wide-eyed demeanor would distract from his sharp wit, which explains a lot. Mr. Cornwell's former group, The Stranglers, were a punk rock band, although you'd be hard pressed to find any aggro 2-chord thrashers on their records. Even if you did, you can be pretty sure that the lyrical content would be rather abstract or absurd or designed to dismantle the general preconception of what is a punk song. So was the foundation for many a-Stranglers tune. From the scuzz-step faux-chauvinism of "Peaches" to the baroque Brownstonian balladry of "Golden Brown", diversity was the most consistent factor throughout the group's catalog - and those were their two biggest hits, so you can imagine what their non-singles were like! Or you can clearly understand what they were like, if you are a Stranglers expert.
However, you might not know so much about what Cornwell is up to these days, even if most Stranglers fans are cult-like devotees. Speaking of which, he collaborated on a great duo album called Nosferatu with Robert Williams (Beefheart drummer) in '79 whilst still in his flagship group, featuring Devo bros Mark and Bob. So it was proven that he could still hold his own outside of the unit. Yet it's not that he lost credibility or relevance after leaving the group in 1990 - quite the contrary, he recently released his new album Hoover Dam for free on the internet, a move not often made by musical royalty unless you're Nine Inch Nails or Coldplay (thanks, wiki).
And a dam good album it is (thanks, Bart Simpson). Hugh came in to openly discuss his punk rock past but the dialogue was dispersed by wonderfully raw and driven guitar-based rock songs from his latest offering. He also dispensed pearls of wisdom about the power of guitar music and great rock music in general. It was pretty cool. What was even cooler was that he got Tedward and engineer Robb to join in on handclaps for his song "Within You Or Without You".
Me + Hugh, forever.

The Best Of Me + You Vol. 1 is the most definitive Viva Radio companion to date. Artists / groups come into our studio regularly to take part in what always promises to be a different type of interview and a special recording session. The often unusual rapport between these creative types and the non-musician personality that is Tedward lends itself to an interesting end product. Peculiar and unique, raw yet expertly produced. Sometimes there is an underlying notion that a Me + You radio session is the only type of session that matters and a total goof at the same time.
This is kind of whattit's all about, folks. Even speaking strictly from a "blogging perspective", this release pertains to a majority of our output. What is this release? Only a digital compilation of about half of the live sessions that we've captured up in the "little studio that could" and by all means, should. You should check out Andrew W.K., Black Lips, Tyvjk, Jay Reatard, The Teenagers, The Dandy Warhols, Times New Viking, and many more, all included on this veritable best-of, either in song or interview snippet form!
And it doesn't end there - this is Me + You + Product Extensions! The BOMPY COMPY comes with a beautiful 32 page zine documenting the behind-the-scenes hijinx with pictures and insider anecdotes. The compilation is available with purchase of the limited edition Me + You t-shirt or separately for the nice price of $5.00. Wait, t-shirt? YES, t-shirt. All we can say is follow this link for more info.
Success! From we to you

SexyCrimes - crimes carried out in a sexually stimulating manner? Our sexual acts so explicit that they are downright criminal? Maybe it's a question best left unanswered, seeing as the true meaning is shared by ferociously in-love couple Cassady Fernandez and Joel Control. No need for an enigma, though, because the SexyCrimes repertoire is made up of joyous punk pop nugs that mix high energy and reverence for their loved ones (most song titles are full names of one of their friends) with a low-periphery drive that goes straight for the heart, or the genitals if you're feeling up for it. It's as simple as that and it's fun as hell.
Fun indeed... those who are further in on the Viva circle might recognize Cassady's name from the days when she was part of the Viva crew. Whether or not she still has to answer to Mattwert's (increasingly) outlandish demands, she's still a fantastic presence in the studio - and while it's not the first time she's been on the other end of a mic in the booth, this 59th Me + You still marks a nice reunion in our books.
And boy do they have some funny tales to tell since they relocated from NYC to Richmond, VA... from recollections of a first show that involved a hilariously named Ska band to an Orlando, FL show that fell through giving way to a beachside camp-out, this lovely couple and dynamic duo of punks definitely have an energy between and around them that makes for a worthwhile listening experience.
O.B.G.Y.-Glen!

\\ Featuring Genesis Breyer P-Orridge as the "Sacrifist," Timothy Wyllie, Adam Parfrey, and The Sabbath Assembly band performing original Process Church songs //
Was The Process Church truly "one of the most dangerous Satanic cults in America"? Or were they an intensely creative apocalyptic shadow side to the flower-powered '60s and New Age '70s? Scores of black-cloaked devotees swept the streets of New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, and other cities selling magazines with titles like Sex, Fear, Love and Death, and a controversial theology proposing a reconciliation of Christ and Satan through awareness and love. Marianne Faithfull, George Clinton and Mick Jagger participated in Process publications, and Funkadelic reproduced Process material in two of their albums.
The inside story of this legendary group has at last emerged with Feral House's LOVE SEX FEAR DEATH by Timothy Wyllie and other former members. On Sunday, Feral House, Process Media, and Sound@One present a simulation of an actual Process Church “Sabbath Assembly” ritual as performed in the 60s, featuring Genesis Breyer P-Orridge as the "Sacrifist." Author Wyllie (Father Micah) will follow to discuss the cult and his time within it in a multimedia presentation. The Sabbath Assembly band, comprised of Imaad Wasif (Tee Pee Records), Jex Thoth (I Hate Records), Laura Leontine, and David Christian (of No-Neck Blues Band), will perform Process hymns and songs throughout. Join us!
Yes, join them. This congregation of indie meets industrial meets intellectual occultism could provide just the spiritual nourishment you've been looking for, or it could be a fantastic spectacle for a Sunday night. Either way, it will be quite a stimulating multimedia experience and is highly recommended!
