Philly's most jiving musical force at the moment is none other than . With ties to groups like The War On Drugs & Blues Control and having emerged from an underground contingency of metaphysical popsmiths that consisted of Gary War (warshadowing...) & Ariel Pink, the man already seemed to have a nicely fashioned nook in a niche of contemporary indie music when the attention clearly shifted towards him earlier this year. But, here, let's strip away the names and associations - all you are left with is one Kurt Vile. Sure, sometimes he tours with his backing band the Violators; yet, more often than not he is alone or accompanied with two variable cohorts.
However, it is important to know that this is more than acceptable because the man's music belongs to his character. He draws from a signature series of choice words, idioms, images, and an overall unique lexicon that is tailored to his voice, which waxes and wanes like a cheesefaced moon. And while the guy doesn't get high "ANYMORE", he might not be a stranger to shotgunning pot for others - vocals that ooze like ganja smoke wafting above shimmering kif-crystal fingerpickings are the foundation for many a KV song. Ah, fuck weed imagery! He may be Philly's self-appointed "Constant Hitmaker" but he sure as shit ain't the constant hit taker. Kurt Vile is all there, as a solo act, as a frontman for a fleshed out group, and as a person.
Nevertheless, he was on his own when he dropped by the Viva studio to humor Tedward. With only a guitar, he provided some wonderful musical numbers and understated insights. He left the real pearls of wisdom strewn about his songs, which is where they belong anyway.
Well, that's Me + You number fifty-jive, a session that'll get you stoned just so Kurt can tell you how you're a man, not a fish, and you'll call it your own revelation. Then, in an act of supremacy you'll go out and eat a fish - because you've got the munchies and he's got the gift!

It always ends up coming back to the D. I can't go a day in New York without making a Michigan connection. Of course it hit me again when I asked the young Lauren Flax, "So, Where Do You Come From?"
I'll take her word when she said Six Mile and Gratiot. It's a good area. The East Side. Everybody should check it out at some point in their lives. Back in the early 90's I didn't know what techno music was, even though it was blasting on the radio every weekend on 96.3 and WJLB. Not only was Lauren lucky enough to go to "Party/Raves" she also DJayed them as well with the likes of Carl Craig. So when I was at Record Time gazing on the wall about what Guided By Voices 7 inch I should buy she was probably in the Dance Room housing it up to a classic Saunderson track.
Fast forward to 2009 and Lauren is currently working on her own music, remixing, and is the on tour DJ for Fischerspooner. Today's Naked Friday's Pt. 31 is one of the better house mixes we've had on Viva Radio! Just some good ole House Jams to send you out for Summer 09. It features some righteous tracks from the likes of, Shur-I-Kan, Jon Cutler, the exotic Justin Martin and some classic Rosario and Inner City! Also on the mix is Lauren's single entitled, "You've Changed" featuring Sia! It's a win win situation here folks!
If you're in New York this weekend she's DJing!
Tonight Friday August 28th at Glasslands
Saturday August 29th at the NYC Final Jelly Pool Party with Grizzly Bear
You can stay posted on Lauren Flax at her site! http://www.myspace.com/laurenflax
Lauren Flax Naked Friday's Pt. 31 Airs Today at 4pm
Thanks Lauren!

Now, if you're looking at the fabulous poster above the text, then you might question why all of the information has been reprinted right below it. Well, maybe it's because we know how mesmerizingly beautiful Tingle Fingers posters are - so much so to the point where you might not be able to pay attention to any of the text laid out before your eyes. This isn't supposed to be about them though, this is about our good friends at Impose and the fantastic event they've put together that goes down on Aug. 29th. Luckily, you'll be able to see Tingle Fingers creations in really real life if you go...
Yes, the "fair" aspect of this happening involves vendors and the *tables* they ride in on selling records, art, and god knows what else. Vendors include Social Registry, Language of Stone, Impose Records, Tingle Fingers, Record Grouch, Electric Literature, Verameat, Tiburon, Another Work In Progress, Bicycle Paintings, Umsteigen, plus more!
It should be a great time, what with the fantastic line-up and the additional treat of a movie screening (what that movie is remains to be seen). Plus, you'll feel great knowing that your money as is going to a good cause seeing as a portion of the proceeds are going to 826NYC, an admirable nonprofit organization that helps nurture and encourage creativity in young people from ages 6-18, which means that they aren't planning on helping me along my creative path.
Lastly, we're happy to be sponsoring his event. It's not the first time that we've collaborated with the Imposers and it certainly shouldn't be the last.

The man that holds the 90's torch alive on Viva Radio, Mr. Ryan Creed, recently did an interview with lead singer Chunx (Heather Jewett) of the group Gravy Train for our wonderful friends over at Street Carnage.
Here's a little excerpt from the interview.
Electrotrashers Gravy Train!!!! were in New York this month to perform at the Brooklyn Pool Party with Prince Paul. The night before the show, lead singer Chunx (Heather Jewett) told me about her pre-teen encounter with Courtney Love at the “Miss World” video shoot, and I had to record the account. It is the saddest story of idol disappointment that I’ve ever heard, but like so many stories about Courtney Love, I can’t decide if I like her more or less now.
Check out the full interview at Street Carnage and always get your 90's fix on Ryan's show, "120 Minutes Forever" on Viva Radio!

Hey-o...
It's that time of the movie-going month - Viva's cinematic beacon and liaison to the Lincoln Gabriel
Caroti wants YOU to know that WE are yet again screening another choice film at the Walter Reade Theater on W 63rd and Broadway. What's it? The Last Days Of Disco. No, not the disco equivalent of the Gus van Sant film that allegorizes the final days of a "grunge icon"'s final days on Earth - this is the 1998 classic starring Viva ambassador Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale. Whensit? Thursday, August 27th.
Set in NYC, this should be a great flick to catch on the silver screen with a crowd of locals and/or disco-hounds, and you know that Viva draws in plenty of the latter... Heck, we even boast some of them as contributors. None other than Dan Selzer will be DJing after the screening along with Jeremy Campbell, who's known for his excellent Dazzle Ships parties.
The clincher, as always, is the fact that there will be FREE drinks at the apres-film. Seriously, as if this movie wasn't already good enough of a social lubricant... love it, hate it, you'll be talking about it vehemently after you've thrown back a few. And you'll be dancing while doing it, because those are two ace DJs. Just don't talk too much shit about it because director Whit Stillman will be in attendance! You heard it from Ted...
Buy your tickets here. Do the hustle ; they're going quick!

Going up on the roof of the studio this afternoon, I was alarmed by the sight of two deadheads making dirty rooftop love in the corner by the ventilation unit. What could they be doing here? Did Matt invite them up? Then it dawned on me - this was a pilgrimage. J. Tripp's latest playlist went up today too and boy, does he have some skeletons in the closet...
The latest Strange Baby playlist "Hazy Baby" contains selections from no more than 7 groups within a 2-hour block. Built around a solid barrage of Grateful Dead with choice cuts by The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Moby Fuckin' Grape, and more, this is quite a formidable playlist.
I can't help but feeling touched by its hippie dippie nature and how it pertains to a culture that was imposed on me as a young boy growing up in New England with a mother who has a pretty average grasp of 60's counterculture, including music. And believe me, the Trippster's grasp is far-reaching and then some, like, a psychedelic reacharound. So for him to be taking from such a widely known and appreciated American songbook is a statement, yet with his extensive knowledge of music he is able to inform the whole experience with a taste that is often missing from the general perception of the Dead.
So, check it out.

I still have a good idea of how Cheveu went about leaving a striking first impression on a few of us here at Viva. We were filming a show that they happened to be playing at the Market Hotel over a year ago, right before SXSW '08. We were all pretty freaked out by this group of weirdos Francais and in a great way.
Fast forward to July '09 - the beauilles are back in town and Tedward, having since been a tourmate and chum of theirs, was more than ready to have the group in the studio for a delightfully bizarre session of Me + You.
What ensued was a lot of fantastic bullshit conversation and some DI DIY DIRTY musical exploration of the most narcotic, neurotic kind. Luckily for us, our international intern Oliver is a native Frenchman and while editing down the video footage of the performance could detect all sorts of strange French undertones and mutterings that would seem to coat the whole affair in a flavorful irony. No joke, it's quite a beautiful thing to hear American and French humor gelling as opposed to clashing, which I feel is rare occurrence.
So, we're happy that it finally happened on Me + You #54, here on Viva Radio here.

Galaxie, the Alison Childs-hosted club night, is presenting a special night of music at an unusual location for the dance-oriented celebrations for which they are known. This event is taking place on Saturday August 15th at Market Hotel! To be honest, the Galaxie banner is quite young so if this shows anything, it shows that one might never know what to expect from Ms. Childs, location-wise, line-up wise, guys wise (the last one I went to was an incredible sausagefest, but only by the end - I showed up too late).
Indeed, the line-up for this event is something else: resident DJs and Viva insiders Justin Miller and Jacques Renault spin on a more consistent note, but headlining the event in a rare U.S. appearance is Publicist, the new project from Sebastian Thomson of Trans Am featuring Ian Svenonius on vocals.
What you CAN expect from Alison are amazing visuals, the type that she's known for and the type that allowed for her to contribute such eye-stimulating, sensory-boggling images to performances by The Juan Maclean, Cluster, and many more.
Here is everything else that you need to know about the night: Ian will be DJing for the first hour or so from his collection of soul and disco 45s. Galaxie residents Justin Miller & Jacques Renault will also be DJing for an all-night, all-ages afterhour disco danceparty at Market Hotel in Brooklyn. We'll also have a laser-like video installation courtesy of Galaxie resident video artist Alison Childs and free vegan spacecakes. The event starts at midnite and goes til 6am. Following this show, Publicist will embark on a lengthy European tour.
See you there...

As you may or may not know, the annual Gathering of the Juggalos is underway. Hopefully you didn't know that, and now you're fully interested in learning more. Perchance you remember the Insane Clown Posse and their irresistible "Halls of Illusion" single of 1998. And if you don't remember, there are PLENTY of people out in Cave-In-Rock, Illinois that remember all too much! The Gathering of the Juggalos myspace page boils down the terrifying convergence of clowns as "Music Mayhem & Family." When they put it like that, it doesn't sound much different than a bar mitzvah or Thanksgiving dinner. Face paint, cargo shorts, wallet chain: check!
ANYWAY, I've just told you all of that for two reasons. ONE, to remind you about Juggalos and their ostensible greatness. And TWO, to give you a frame of reference for Max Wowch aka Maxxy 2 Dope's Night of the Juggalopes! It's going to be insane, obviously.
Sunday Best, being good as usual, has Motor City Drum Ensemble scheduled to serve up soul with a side of sunshine. For all you rained-out New Yorkers, this is a great place to get some sunny summer vengeance against the soggy summer we've had so far. And if it does rain, the folks in charge are fully prepared to scoot the whole affair indoors to the Bell House.
It may be a little far out (get it?) to mention now, but we've got a sweet helping of goodness to impose on you in a few weeks. Viva Radio and
Impose present Party With Tables, a Summer Send-off with a kickass lineup: Psychic Ills, Screaming Females, Zs, Silver Summit, Sharon Van Etten, Future Islands, Air Waves, Boogie Boarder and a slew of guest djs. Woah. The awesomeness will be followed immediately by a movie screening courtesy of Cinema 16. Catch the whole thing at the same place you've been hitting for Sunday Best, The Brooklyn Yard. You can't wait.
Now get out there and catch the sun!

The man re unites with his 90's band in North Carolina last week and he's back in action today. I crashed our friend Kelly's sweet dinner party last night after the Hall and Oates concert and started drinking Gin and Soda's all night. Milton and I basically didn't want to leave because Kelly's apartment feels like you're on vacation.
Before she could even get the dishes done we ended just passing out on the couches. I woke up scarred, frightened, and cold. But it was okay because we were still at Kelly's and then she made us some coffee and we had egg sandwiches from that Mexican Bakery on Bedford and sat down at New York Muffin and took in the sights and smells of a sweet Friday Morning.
Milton wrote a song about it over IM with our friend Paul Conrad Have a great weekend everybody!

I ran into Matthew Radune at Jacob Riis Beach a few weeks back and we had a good oie time talking about Teddy Pendergrass and other assorted disco oddities. In case you haven't already noticed I like to do all my business on the Beach. I decided we needed to make this happen and get Radune on board the Naked Friday's roster. On today's Naked Friday's Pt. 30 you'll hear some of the finer edits of 2009 along with some very classic Chicago House Mental Breakdown tracks!
Matthew Radune is a Brooklyn based DJ, architect, and designer who's been setting up rooftop events and underground loft parties for several years in Brooklyn. In the last year he's DJed at several of the finest art establishments in New York, including MOMA for their Poprally event, the Guggenheim, the Museum of Art and Design, and the Sculpture Center.
You can contact Matthew via his site. http://matthewradune.blogspot.com/

Here's a very fun loving NBA professional basketball player in action during the off season. I can't say much for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but Delonte West is soaring high during his 18 minute wait in line at KFC! Not only does he reference KFC's Rasberry Ice Tea, but I'm also feeling the Chipotle reference as well! Also note the two workers at KFC who are completely stoked by his drive thru appearance!

Brooklyn's White Rabbits hail from Columbia, Missouri a city nestled amongst the many tributaries of a river bearing said state's name. Expanding from a college quintet to a sextet after a move to New York City in 2005, the Rabbits were quick and nimble to find an audience for their frenetic brand of minor chord driven Yorke-rock. After their 2007 debut album Fort Nightly, making the UK festival rounds, and appearing on Late Night With David Letterman, the band made a label jump to TBD Records and started work on their sophomore album with Britt Daniel, the bed-haired brain behind Spoon.
That album, It's Frightening, marches to the same drums that became an integral part of the band's live set during their extensive touring behind Fort Nightly. The Rabbits find maximal in the minimal; vocal harmonies soar but never overshadow the corner pocket piano parts or stick-to-the-ribs rhythm section grooves. Listening to the band dissect the max/min during their visit to Viva Radio for a special taping of Me + You was an experience in the key of life. The broadcast is archived on Viva Radio's Me + You program!
