This past June, Friends of Friends (FoF) records released TV Dream, a promising EP from 20-year old Venice, CA boy, Jasper Patterson – stage name Groundislava. The standout track on the EP, entitled “TV Dream” (also the lead single off the soon-to-be-released LP Feel Me), features the elusive and excellent Clive Tanaka, whose Jet Set Siempre 1" cassette dominated pretty much every party that was foolish enough to let me get ahold of a MacBook within the last year. So I’m listening, naturally.

As it turns out, “TV Dream” is just what I hoped it would be, one of those instantly rewarding bliss-out jams, one of those “swear to god I’ll fall in love with you right now”, her eyes daring you, you continue, “right here on this dance floor, I swear will” and she smiles kind of songs. The hook is a gentle, vocoded mantra, a computerized Tanaka singing, “Do you remember the night that we first met?” Ah, the romance. What a dream. More tangibly speaking, the track most closely resembles something off of Washed Out’s Within and Without, but Jasper’s track feels even bigger than “Eyes Be Closed” or “Amor Fati”. The VUs bob methodically in and out of the red, indicating something altogether warmer.

The rest of TV Dream is harder to pin down. Keyboard tones melt and drip down the stairs. Only the title track is of such a recognizable “form” (pop or chill-wave or whatever). The results are somewhat mixed, but exhibit a new, interesting talent making equally new and interesting moves. We move with.

TV Dream is available now for a fiver via Bandcamp. Feel Me is due August 28th..
